GUEST BIO
Parents of autistic children hire Melissa when the upheaval at home has them walking on eggshells, emotionally exhausted, and second-guessing every move. Our partnership provides space to thoughtfully sort through all the advice coming at them and reprioritize self-care, so parents feel confident in their choices. Melissa understands the emotional challenges faced through her own journey navigating her daughter’s diagnosis. With 32 years of leadership experience and professional coaching certifications, she offers a six-module course, one-on-one sessions, and a supportive community. Her work ensures that parents feel fully supported and equipped.
SHOW NOTES
In today’s conversation, I sit down with my friend Melissa Berger to talk about navigating an autism diagnosis as a family and building a home where everyone can breathe again. We explore the shock, grief, and relief that can show up for parents, the difference between tantrums and meltdowns, and why nervous system regulation for the parent is non-negotiable. Melissa shares how masking and executive function workarounds can hide challenges for years, why language matters, shifting from “high or low functioning” to “high or low support needs”, 5 and how presumed competence opens doors instead of closing them. We also get into communication that actually lands, advocating with “persistent persuasion,” and leading with curiosity by asking why before we judge. If you’ve been walking on eggshells, this episode offers hope, practical shifts, and a reminder that you can take care of your child and take care of you. That is the path to clarity, calm, and real support.
