Description

Imagine sitting by a busy street every day, invisible yet noticed for what you lack. This was the daily reality for a man born blind, a fixture in his community who was known more for his perceived failures than his humanity. The story of this man’s life took a dramatic turn when he encountered Jesus, and this extraordinary event speaks volumes about how God disrupts assumptions and changes lives.

When Jesus and His disciples saw the man, the disciples' question revealed a narrow perspective: "Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" They sought to assign blame for his condition, reflecting common but flawed theology of their time. Jesus, however, turned their question on its head. The man’s blindness, Jesus explained, was not about sin but an opportunity for God’s glory to shine through.

What happened next was unconventional, even uncomfortable. Jesus made mud with His saliva, placed it on the man’s eyes, and instructed him to wash in the Pool of Siloam. Imagine the blind man’s thoughts as he stumbled through the streets to follow Jesus’ directions. His healing journey required action, faith, and vulnerability.

When he returned home, his sight restored, the man faced disbelief. Neighbours doubted his identity, thinking this miracle was too great to be true. The religious leaders, blinded by their rigid traditions, interrogated him and dismissed the miracle because it occurred on the Sabbath, a day of rest. Their legalism prevented them from recognising the work of God in front of them.

This story reminds us to look for God in unexpected places. The religious leaders missed the miracle because they were bound by their traditions. Let’s not make the same mistake. Instead, may we remain open to God’s surprising, sometimes uncomfortable, ways of working in and through our lives.

Prayer Prompt:
"Lord, open my eyes to see You in the everyday moments of life. Reveal the areas in my heart that need transformation and give me the courage to surrender them to You. Help me to trust in Your work, even when it challenges my understanding. May my encounters with You inspire me to love and serve others with boldness and grace, pointing them toward Your truth. Amen."

Discussion Questions:
- How have your assumptions about God or others been challenged by unexpected encounters?
- What steps of faith have you taken in response to a prompting from God, even when it felt uncomfortable?
- How can you support someone else in recognising and responding to their encounters with Jesus?
