Purusha Sukta – Rigveda Mandala 10, Shukta 90
सहस्त्र सिरों वाला पुरुष, सहस्त्रों आँखों वाला, सहस्त्रों पैरों वाला, यह पुरुष समस्त भूमण्डल को व्याप्त करता है और उसे अपनी दस अंगुल से अधिकता से भी परिव्याप्त करता है॥1॥
The Purusha (Cosmic Being) has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, and a thousand feet. He pervades the Earth on all sides and extends beyond by ten fingers’ breadths. (1)
यह समस्त विश्व पुरुष का ही शरीर है जो हुआ है और जो होने वाला है। वह पुरुष अमरत्व का भी स्वामी है। वह अन्न के द्वारा भी बढ़ता है॥2॥
The Purusha is all that has been and all that is yet to be. He is also the lord of immortality, and of whatever grows by food. (2)
पुरुष की यह महिमा है कि वह इस प्रकार से सब ओर व्यापक है और पुरुष इस महिमा से भी परे है। इस पुरुष के पाद का तो यह संसार है और तीन पाद तो अमरत्व में है॥3॥
Such is His greatness, and the Purusha is even greater. All creatures are but one-fourth of Him; the other three-fourths are immortal, in heaven. (3)
पुरुष के तीन पादों से ऊँचे उठकर अमरत्व की स्थिति में हैं और एक पाद से वह पुनः इस संसार में प्रविष्ट होता है। इस पुरुष ने आकाश को चारों ओर से व्याप्त कर लिया और वह इस भूमि पर स्थापित हो गया॥4॥
With three-fourths of Himself, He ascended and one-fourth of Him was reborn here. From that, He spread out in all directions, into the animate and the inanimate world. (4)

इस प्रकार जब पुरुष का विभाग किया गया, तब उसके मुख से ब्राह्मण, बाहु से क्षत्रिय, ऊरु से वैश्य और पाद से शूद्र उत्पन्न हुए॥12॥
12. When the gods divided the Purusha, into how many parts did they arrange him? What was his mouth, what were his arms, what were his thighs and feet declared to be?
इस प्रकार ब्राह्मण मुख से, क्षत्रिय बाहु से, वैश्य ऊरु से और शूद्र पाद से उत्पन्न हुए॥13॥
13. The Brahmin was his mouth, the Kshatriya made of his arms, His thighs became the Vaishya, and from His feet, the Shudra was produced.

मैं महान् पुरुष को जानता हूँ, जो सर्वव्यापक है, वह अज्ञान के अंधकार से परे प्रकाशमय है। वह सभी रूपों का सृजनकर्ता है और समस्त प्राणियों के नामों का निर्धारण करता है॥16॥
16. I know this great Purusha, who is radiant like the sun and beyond all darkness. One who knows Him in this way becomes immortal in this very life. There is no other path to liberation.
प्रजापति ने इस पुरुष का विभाग किया और शक्र ने इसे चारों दिशाओं में विभाजित किया। इसे जो इस प्रकार जानता है, वह इस जीवन में अमर हो जाता है। इसके अतिरिक्त कोई अन्य मार्ग नहीं है॥17॥
17. The gods, performing the sacrifice, worshipped the sacrifice by offering the Purusha as the oblation. These were the first duties. By this, the great ones attained the heavens where the ancient Sadhyas and gods reside.
यज्ञ में यज्ञ के द्वारा देवताओं ने पुरुष की स्तुति की। यही धर्म का आधार बना। वे सब देवता उसी आकाश में जाकर बस गए जहाँ पहले से ही साध्य और देवता निवास करते थे॥18॥
18. By sacrifice, the gods worshipped the sacrifice. These were the first rites. They reached the heights of heaven, where the ancient gods and Sadhyas dwell.
