The Greek Philosopher, Socrates, once said that it’s disgraceful to grow old and never fully develop the body’s strength and beauty to their highest limits. Part of the reason we don’t embody this belief today is that we view the body as a curse and not a blessing. We believe as a society that aging happens because we get older, when, in reality, aging happens because we are disgraceful to our bodies as we get older. As Socrates was alluding to, the human body is meant to be challenged and pushed to the test. Without this external resistance we never find out what we’re truly made of and, worse, deteriorate into the thing that we loath the most…someone who is dependent on others because we’re unable to help ourselves. Of course, it doesn’t have to be this way. We can, and should, strive to be our best through the regular training and challenging of our bodies. To start doing this, though, it means shifting our mindset. We currently view exercise as thing we HAVE to do to beat disease. But, until we shift our mindset to exercise and training as the things we GET to do to become our best selves, physically, mentally, spiritually, relationally, then we’ll have a hard time making exercise a regular part of our lives.
