Laidley, who played for the West Coast Eagles and North Melbourne football clubs, was diagnosed with gender dysphoria in her 40s, however; before she could announce the news and subsequent transition to the world (and her family), in 2020, she arrested and charged with stalking a former partner. Along with a drug possession charge, she was taken to a police station to have her mug shot taken. While in custody, senior police officers then shared images with each other of Laidley dressed as a woman. One then leaked it to the media, making front page news.
