New Alishan Railcars with Cypress Interiors

The Alishan Forest Railway is a well-known attraction that takes tourists up the famous mountain.

It has beautiful forest scenery, unique tracks, and beautiful train stations.

This year, the Railway office will be introducing 6 new carriages to the public.

The interiors of the new carriages are lined with Formosan (台灣扁柏) and Hinoki cypress (檜木) wood.

The carriages' roofs, floors, walls, desks and armrests are all made of wood.

They also feature ergonomic (人體工學) seats with leather that are both comfortable and beautiful.

The windows are bigger, for a better view.

The new train will be named "Formosensis", which comes from the Latin name for the Formosan cypress.

The whole wooden theme reminds tourists of the logging era of Taiwan's history.

More to Learn about Fukushima Damage

On Mar 11th, 2011, a major earthquake struck Japan, causing the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

The earthquake caused a powerful tsunami (海嘯) with 14-meter-high waves.

This tsunami damaged the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

That caused the most severe nuclear disaster since Chernobyl

About 110,000 residents were evacuated (疏散) within a 20-kilometer radius (半徑).

Since then, 12 years have passed.

The radioactive debris (放射性殘骸) in the 3 melted reactors (反應爐) needs to be removed, but that is not an immediate issue.

Water that was used to cool the 3 damaged reactors was collected and stored in about 1000 tanks.

The water cannot be taken out because it is still radioactive.

However, the water tanks will reach their full capacity of 1.37 million tonnes this year.

The Japanese government plans to put the radioactive water into the ocean.

They say they will make sure the water's radioactivity is far below the legal limits.

They plan to dilute (稀釋) the water with a lot of seawater before putting it into the ocean.

Local fishing communities are against the plan, fearing that it would hurt marine life.

Other countries like China and South Korea are also concerned.

Report Predicts More Obesity Issues by 2035

A report from the World Obesity Federation says 51% of the world will be obese (肥胖) by 2035.

That's more than 4 billion people.

We should remember that all bodies are different.

That's normal and beautiful!

There are many healthy shapes and sizes.

And good health is what's important.

This report is mainly about health.

Obesity can be hard on the body.

It contributes to the development of over 38 diseases like hypertension (高血壓), and diabetes (糖尿病).

The people who wrote the report say they are not blaming individuals.

They want everyone to think more about things in our society, environment and biology that cause obesity.
