Climate Groups Want More Carbon Cuts

Climate change is a serious issue that’s affecting every country in the world.

It’s caused by carbon dioxide emissions and other pollutants in Earth’s atmosphere.

Many countries have set goals to cut carbon emissions (減少碳排放量) to deal with this problem.

And world leaders are in Egypt to discuss more solutions in the United Nations’ COP27 Climate Change Conference

Climate groups in Taiwan are calling (呼籲) for more action from the government.

They say Taiwan’s plan to cut 20-percent of carbon emissions by 2030 is not enough.

If we want to reach net zero emissions (淨零排放) by 2050, we need to aim higher (更高的目標).

They want to increase the goal to 40-percent by 2030.

An environmentalist says if the government passes a bill to increase renewable energy sources and promote electric vehicles, Taiwan can achieve this goal.

The climate groups say many local governments already have plans to cut more than 30-percent by 2030.

They're calling for the central government to act as soon as possible.

Astronomers Discover Earth's Nearest Black Hole

A black hole is a region of space from which nothing, not even light, can escape.

Black holes can suck in (吸入) anything around them - including stars and planets.

Scientists think there are hundreds of thousands (數十萬) of black holes in the Milky Way.

They are not easy to see, and people find them by the way they affect other things near them.

Kind of like a magnet (磁鐵) under a piece of paper.

Even though you can’t see the magnet from above the paper, you know it’s there because you can see things being pulled towards it (東西被拉向它).

Astronomers have recently discovered the black hole that is closest to Earth.

It’s called Gaia BH1, after the Gaia spacecraft (宇宙飛船) that found it.

And, well, it’s the closest black hole to Earth, but it’s not that close.

It’s around 1,500 light years away.

One light year is around nine trillion kilometers

For reference, the Sun is around 148 million kilometers (1.48億公里) away from us.

So you don’t need to worry about Gaia BH1 getting to us any time soon.

Teenager Recreates the Universe in Minecraft

Have you ever heard of Minecraft?

It’s a video game you can play on a smartphone, computer, or video game console (遊戲機).

The game has virtually infinite terrain to explore.

And players can even create their own worlds from imagination (想像力).

Many gamers use the Lego-like cubes in Minecraft to create entire towns, cities, and even the Wizarding World of Harry Potter!

One teenager in California decided to raise the bar even higher

He recreated the entire known universe (已知宇宙) in the game.

Christopher Slayton is 18 years old.

He spent two months copying the cosmos (宇宙) in the game.

His first step was to recreate our planet Earth.

Before making Earth in the game, Slayton went skydiving (跳傘) to see Earth from above, and used a globe (地球儀) to measure the distance between each continent.

Slayton studied real-world stars through a telescope before building the cluster of galaxies.

And his model universe (模型宇宙) even includes a black hole!

He posted a YouTube video showcasing (展示) how he built his model universe.

He’s very talented!
