Changhua Roadhouse Becomes Changhua's Eighth National Monument

The Ministry of Culture (文化部) has made the Changhua Railway Roundhouse one of Taiwan's national monuments (國家古蹟).

The 100-year old structure (建築結構) was built in 1922 during Japan's rule over Taiwan.

It is the only railway roundhouse (鐵路迴旋處) that still works on the island.

A roundhouse is a building with a circular (圓形) or half-circular shape (半圓形) used by railways for servicing and storing trains.

It's like a train garage (車庫).

The Changhua Roundhouse has twelve stalls (車位) for trains around a turntable.

A turntable (轉盤) is a device that rolls trains around so they can move back on the rail.

The roundhouse is still operational (可操作) and people can look at historical trains on a rotating basis (輪流).

Taiwan had five other railway roundhouses, but all of the other ones were demolished (拆除).

Changhua County has tried to establish the location as a historic site for many years.

The landmark (地標) has been a county monument since 2000, and officials are happy it got a promotion (升職).

It features unique architecture (獨特的建築) and has an important significance (意義) in Taiwanese history.

It's now one of eight national monuments people can visit in Changhua County.

Visitors are allowed to enter for free and take a look at the fan-shaped structure from an observation deck (觀景台).

Cheese Rolling Returns to British Sporting Calendar

Many popular events were canceled (取消) in the last two years because of COVID-19.

In the English village of Brockworth, a yearly tradition has now returned.

Cheese Rolling was first recorded (首次記錄) in 1826 and has become part of this little town's culture.

Thousands of spectators watch the contestants roll and tumble after a four-kilogram round of Gloucester cheese down a 200-meter slope.

The cheese reaches speeds of 112 kilometers an hour, and the first person to make it down to the bottom of the hill is the winner.

It's impossible for competitors to stay upright (直立) and many of them fall and roll down the hill (滾下山).

There are also people who work as 'catchers' to save those who lose control when they pursue (追) the cheese.

Bumps and bruises (腫塊和瘀傷) are expected for those taking part, and medics (醫務人員) are ready to help people who get hurt.

This year's Cheese Rolling competition will have three men's races and a women's race.

There's also a children's event, but they race up the hill rather than down for safety.

The winner gets to eat the trophy: a huge wheel of Double Gloucester cheese.
