Airport customs reveal a major drug bust

Most countries have a customs service (海關).

It is run by customs officers

They are responsible for checking goods to make sure nothing or illegal dangerous enters or leaves the country.

They work mostly at ports, airports and border checkpoints between countries.

They are most commonly seen at airports, inspecting passengers' luggage.

Have you ever been stopped by a customs officer before?

No, I haven't.

Well, I have. It was because I forgot to put my toothpaste into a plastic bag.

Luckily, I was not arrested.

Thanks for that, Jake.

Anyway … some customs officers use sniffer dogs (嗅探犬).

Sniffer dogs are very clever.

They are able to sniff luggage and containers to detect if there are any bad stuff, like drugs and weapons, hidden inside.

I wonder if they used sniffer dogs to bust Bald Head's drug operation.

Excuse me?

Did you not hear about 'Bald Head' and his two accomplices (幫兇)?

Uhh…

Well, let me tell you more.

Sometimes, criminals give themselves nicknames to keep their real names secret.

The big boss, or 老大, of a drug cartel (販毒集團), gave himself the nickname 'Bald Head' (光頭).

Okay…

Customs officers recently found two people trying to bring drugs into Taiwan.

They hid drugs inside containers labeled as protein powder.

After the police questioned them, the two individuals said they were working for someone called 'Bald Head.'

So where is 'Bald Head' now?

At the moment, I'm afraid 'Bald Head' is still at large.

He is wanted by five different police stations.

Japan Postpones Launch of Mars Moon Probe to 2026

You've heard of Mars, right, Nancy?

Yes, I have.

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun in our solar system.

That's correct.

Now, our planet Earth has just one moon. But did you know that Mars has two moons?

Two moons?

Yup. Pretty cool, huh?

Their names are Phobos and Deimos.

Now, you may be wondering why I'm bringing up the subject of Mars and its two moons.

It seems a bit random, doesn't it?

Especially after hearing about the Bald Head story.

Randomness is aplenty in my scripts.

Anyway, you might have heard in the news recently …

Japan plans to launch a probe to both of Mars' moons to collect soil samples

Most space missions focus on studying Mars itself, not its moons.

However, Japan delayed the launch of its Mars moon probe by two years.

The reason is that their H3 rocket (火箭) failed in March.

Before space probes go to their destination, they have to be lifted off the Earth quickly.

We use carrier rockets (運載火箭) to accomplish this.

Carrier rockets can travel very fast.

They typically reach speeds between 25-thousand and 40-thousand kilometers per hour.

That's 83 to 133 times faster than the top speed of Taiwan High Speed Rail!

When a carrier rocket is flying, equipment detaches and continues into space, while the rocket falls back to Earth.

If a carrier rocket isn't foolproof, there's no way to leave Earth.

So, in today's News Bites…

…we talked about customs officers and what they do.

They are responsible for checking goods to make sure nothing dangerous enters or leaves the country.

Some customs officers use sniffer dogs.
And…

Japan postpones the launch of their Mars Moon Probe to 2026.

This is because their H3 rocket failed in March.

Carrier rockets are used to send things like satellites and probes into space.

Tasty Tidbit

And in today's tasty tidbit…

The oldest eating tool is probably the knife.

People have used knives to cut and prepare food for thousands of years.

At first, knives were likely made of stones.

Never in my life have I used a stone to cut anything…

Neither have I…
