Volcanic Gas from Guishan Island
What would you do if you saw smoke coming out of a volcano?
Run far, far away?
Smoke from an underwater volcano was seen in northern Taiwan recently.
A plume (羽狀物) of gas was seen off the coast of Guishan Island.
Guishan Island, or "Turtle Island" is an island in the Pacific Ocean.
It is part of Yilan County.
The island got its name because its shape looks a bit like a turtle.
Guishan Island is also a dormant volcano (休眠火山).
That means it has not erupted (爆發) for a long time, but still may erupt in the future.
Many people take whale-watching boats out to the island.
And recently, one boat saw a little more than sea animals.
People on the boat saw a gas plume rise from the seawater near the island.
The plume rose up about 200 meters high!
The gas came from an opening in the volcano under the water.
But experts say the plume is not dangerous.
They say the gas probably came out after underwater rocks moved, or the earth shifted.
The experts say this is a natural part of the environment around Guishan Island.
The last time a gas plume was seen from the island was on January 10th this year.

Nepali Guide Saves Climber from Everest "Death Zone"
Mount Everest is a dream for many climbers.
It's the tallest mountain on Earth above sea level, at 8,848 meters tall.
But it can also be a nightmare.
Recently, a Malaysian climber trying to climb Everest fell ill.
He was more than 8,000 meters up the mountain.
That area on the mountain is called the "death zone".
The air there is very thin, with low levels of oxygen, and temperatures can get to minus 30 degrees Celsius.
The terrain (地形) there is also very dangerous.
The Malaysian climber could not climb anymore.
That's when a Nepali guide came along.
Gelje Sherpa was guiding a client up to the peak (山頂).
But when they saw the Malaysian climber, Sherpa said "my heart did not let me leave him there".
The guide told his client that they would have to go back down the mountain without reaching the peak.
The client paid at least $45,000 US dollars for the climb.
The client was angry, but Sherpa said he wanted to take the sick man down the mountain.
The guide gave the sick man his oxygen supply, but the Malaysian man was still very weak (虛弱).
The guide had to carry the man over parts of the mountain.
Finally, they got down to a camp at about 7,000 meters on the mountain.
A helicopter then took the sick man down the rest of the way.
The Malaysian man later sent the guide a message, telling him "You saved my life, you are god to me".
Gelje Sherpa has reached the top of Mount Everest six times.
He says he does not regret his decision to turn back that day.
一名受困死亡區的登山客被當地嚮導發現,花了6小時背他下山,成功救回一命。
