Well hello there! You're listening to News Bites!
I'm Trevor Torto…
And I'm Paz Bueno.
Whoah, how is your English so good?
Okay, let's look at today's stories:
A dog wins the lottery, an asteroid misses Earth, and people find a needle in a haystack.
More on that, coming up next!

Taiwan Dog Helps Win $1 million NT Lottery
What sound does a dog make?
Well, if you speak English, you might think your dog says, "Bark!" or "Ruff!"
And if you speak Spanish (西班牙文), you might think dogs say, "Guau! Guau!"
And if you're a Chinese speaker, your dog could be saying, "Wang! Wang!" 【汪!
So for one Taiwanese couple (情侶), that was the right word, at the right time…
This couple was walking by a lottery shop, when they heard a dog barking.
They said the dog's 【汪】 sounded just like 【旺】, like in the word 【興旺】, which means "prosperity" and "good fortune".
So, they decided to buy a lottery ticket (大樂透)…
And they won 1,000,000 NT
That's some really good 【興旺】!
*cow moo*
Okay, it might be time to mooooove on to the next story…

Asteroid Almost Hits Earth
Hey, remember dinosaurs?
Me neither (我也不記得)… because they've been gone for millions of years!
And that's because a giant asteroid (巨大的小行星) hit Earth.
It was about 10 kilometers wide
Pretty scary, huh?
Well, another one almost hit us again!
On January 27th, at around 8:30 AM, an asteroid flew just 3,000 kilometers from Earth (離地球只有三千公里), and then back out into space.
That's closer than some satellites!
Luckily, the asteroid was only about five meters wide.
But an asteroid this size, coming this close to Earth, is still pretty rare.
And the scary thing is, scientists only found this asteroid a few days before it came close.
Space is big and dark, and it's difficult to find these tiny space rocks.
The smallest ones are okay, because if they come close, they burn up (燒掉) before they hit the ground.
And we don't have to worry about the biggest asteroids, like the one that hit the dinosaurs…
Because thanks to lots of math (數學計算), we know they aren't going to hit us (讓我們知道它們不會撞上地球).
But what about the medium ones?
Well, we'll have to keep watching… and doing our math homework!

Tiny Radioactive Object Goes Missing
Have you ever heard the words, "looking for a needle in a haystack" (在乾草堆裡面找一根針)?
In Chinese, you might say 【
It means you're looking for something REALLY tiny and difficult to find (又小又難找), like a needle (針), inside something REALLY big, like a haystack (乾草堆).
Well, today's "needle" is a small metal object
And today's haystack is… 1,400 kilometers of road in Australia
A few weeks ago, a truck (卡車) was driving along this long road in Western Australia with a tiny object called "Caesium-137" (銫-137元素), which is very radioactive (很強的放射性).
If something is radioactive, that means it's very dangerous, because anyone who gets close to it will get very sick.
But, when this truck finally got to the end of the long road…
This tiny radioactive object was gone!
People said it must have fallen off the truck, onto the road…
And they were very worried that people driving over it could get sick, too.
So they drove up and down, back and forth, along one thousand kilometers of road, over and over again…
Looking for this tiny thing, even smaller than a coin
And finally, after six days, they found it, right by the side of the road.
People say we're really lucky to have found this needle in such a giant haystack.
But we should really be more careful with our needles!
