What's up everyone, it's time for a new episode of News Bites…

I'm Brody Halverson.

And I'm Paz Bueno.

Today's stories…
A new technology in Taiwan, and people glue their feet to the floor.

And in today's Tasty Tidbit, let's talk about cells!

Let's get into it.

Taiwan Leads in micro LED Technology

How often do you look at a screen?

You probably look at your phone screen all day.

We spend hours and hours looking at TV screens, computer screens, every kind of display.

Can we make these screens… better?

That's what some companies in Taiwan want to do.

And they are using a new technology called micro LED

Imagine a transparent window that can also display images like a TV screen.

You could be looking out your car window, and the screen could show information about the things you see.

Or, imagine a little TV screen inside your glasses!

Micro LED technology is making these dreams possible.

What is micro LED?

"Micro" means small.

And LED means light-emitting diode.
"Micro"是微型的意思,"LED"是發光二極管的意思。

You have probably seen an LED light before.

Many shop signs, street lights and even traffic lights use LED lights.

So, a micro LED is just… a really small light.

How small?

Some micro LED lights are only 2.5 microns wide.

That means you could fit 20 of them on the width of a human hair!

But when you put millions of these lights together…

They can create an amazing display (令人驚嘆的畫面), like a TV screen, a phone screen, or even an HD smartwatch screen.

Just a few years ago, this technology was impossible.

Scientists knew how to make such small LED lights.

But they did not know how to put them all together on the display!

Then, a few years ago, some Taiwanese companies figured out a way to do it.

They used a new method called "mass transfer".

So for now, Taiwan is the only country in the world with a micro LED production line.

That means using this technology to make lots of new micro LED screens.

What's more, this technology works with even smaller LEDs.

So, smaller lights mean they can fit more lights on your display.

And that means the image on your screen will be better and brighter.
So keep an eye on this new technology…

It might be coming to your TV, your phone, or even your glasses!

Climate Protester Glues Feet to Floor

We all hear the same news every day, about climate change

We hear the climate is getting warmer!

It's easy to get used to this news, and ignore it.

But some people are serious about this news…

…and they won't let people ignore them!

They're the ones who glued their feet to the floor at the US Open.

What? They used glue… to stick their feet… to the floor?

That's right. And they did it at a big tennis tournament in New York City, the US Open

It started right in the middle of a game.

American tennis player Coco Gauff was playing hard.

Suddenly, she heard a loud noise.

Some people in the stands were shouting, "End Fossil Fuels!"

Coco looked up, and saw three people standing.

Their shirts also said "End Fossil Fuels!"

Coco thought, those are climate protesters.

Soon, the police came to remove the protesters

But, they couldn't do it…

….because one protester had glued their bare feet to the floor!

It took police almost an hour to remove the glue and take the protesters away.

Coco continued to play her match, and won.

In fact, she won the whole tournament.

What did she think about the protest?

Coco said, "It was done in a peaceful way, so I can't get too mad at it,"
Coco

She said, "Obviously I don't want it to happen when I'm winning. But hey, if that's what they felt they needed to do to get their voices heard, I can't really get upset at it."

So who were the protesters?

They belong to a group called the Extinction Rebellion.

They want people to stop using fossil fuels, like coal and gas.

The protesters want everyone to know that fossil fuels are heating up the climate.

They said that a hot climate will cause more problems than protesters.

So, they will keep protesting at games and other events, until their message is heard.

So, in today's News Bites…

Some Taiwanese companies are using a new technology to make screens.

New micro-LED technology uses very small lights to make displays.

This technology can improve screens for phones, computers and other uses.

Climate protesters interrupted the US open.

They shouted "End Fossil Fuels", and one of them glued their feet to the floor.

Tasty Tidbit

Every animal is made of lots of tiny things called "cells".

For example, scientists say the average mouse has around 3 trillion cells… In Chinese, that's

But how many cells does each human have?

Well, to tell the truth… researchers say they haven't finished counting yet!

But we do know a few things:

Humans have more than 200 different types of cells in their body.

And even if you don't count the cells, there are still other things in many humans… like almost 40 trillion bacteria!

And finally, of course, many people can be bigger, or smaller, so it's hard to count for everyone.

Just remember… there are trillions of cells and bacteria, all working together to make YOU!

If you have a fun fact, a joke, or interesting news you'd like to share with us, record your message and send us your Tasty Tidbit to newsbites@icrt.com.tw, and you might hear it at the end of an episode!

We'll see you next time for an exciting new episode of News Bites!
