Help Shoushan Zoo Name a Capybara

The Shoushan Zoo needs your help.

They need a name for a new baby capybara (水豚)!

Capybaras are rodents (囓齒動物).

In fact, they are the biggest living rodent.

They look a bit like a big guinea pig (天竺鼠).

They are brown, with strong, round bodies.

And they live in big family groups near water.

They like to eat grass and water plants.

They also eat fruit and tree bark (樹皮).

The baby capybara was born at the Shoushan Zoo on January 6th.

Zookeepers say the pup likes to sit close to heating lamps (保溫燈).

And it likes to sit on cushions (軟墊) or soft grass.

Sometimes, it even sits in its food bowl to eat!

Now that it's more than a month old, the zoo wants to give the capybara a name.

The zoo asked people to suggest (建議,提) names for the capybara.

The zoo then looked at all the suggested names.

Then it chose a few names for its list.

And it is now letting people vote online for their favorite name from the list.

Sounds of the Arctic and Antarctic

When we say the Arctic and Antarctic, what do you think of?

Ice and white snow…

Polar bears and penguins…

But do you know what the Arctic and Antarctic sound like?

Scientists (Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity and the Alfred Wegener Institute) are working on a project to record the sounds of the ocean in the polar regions.

They put underwater microphones into the ocean.

And they recorded sounds for two years.

The scientists say most people have never heard these sounds.

So they are sharing some of the sounds online.

This is the sound of ice moving.

This is a minke whale (小鬚鯨).

This is a crabeater seal

There are sounds made by humans too.

This is the sound of explosions (爆炸), made by people looking for oil and gas in the ocean.

What about this one?

Actually, even the scientists don't know what this is yet.

By sharing these sounds, the scientists hope people will think more about the ocean.

They hope to show how noisy (吵鬧) oceans are.

They believe we need laws to control how much noise humans make in the ocean.

They are also working with musicians, to turn the sounds into music.

They say the ocean is part of life on Earth.

But the ocean is facing danger from noise pollution and climate change.

They hope science and art can help protect the ocean and the planet.
