New Taipei Recycles 64 Tons of Discarded Fishing Nets in 2 Years

Close your eyes and picture (想像) the ocean.

We normally imagine a calm and beautiful scene, with a clear ocean and blue skies.

But, ocean pollution (海洋污染) is a growing problem in today's world.

Chemicals and trash are two kinds of pollutants (污染物) dangerous for health, environmental, and economic reasons.

Marine trash (海洋垃圾) comes in many forms-most of them plastic.

Common types of marine trash include shopping bags, bottle caps, food wrappers, and fishing nets (漁網).

Fishing nets are getting caught in the reefs along the coasts of Taiwan.

New Taipei says the Fisheries Agency (漁業處) has cleared nets from reefs in the coastal sea areas (海域礁區), removing more than 16 metric tons in the past four years.

Over the years, they have promoted the recycling of 64 metric tons of discarded fishing nets.

The recycled plastic pellets are used for making sunglasses frames, mobile phone stands, coasters, and other daily necessities.

Take a look around you: what daily necessities around you can be made from recycled plastic?

240 Skeletons Found under a Department Store in the U.K.

October is known as the "spooky month" in Western culture.

That's because Halloween falls on October 31st, and the weather changes into cool autumn

During this time of year, many families in Canada and the United States decorate (裝飾) their homes with all sorts of spooky decorations.

Like witches, spider webs, and skeletons!

And speaking of which (說到這裡)…

Archaeologists in the U.K. have recently discovered a historical site hidden under an old department store.

It included a graveyard (墓園) from the early 18th century, and the remains (遺體) of 240 people were buried there.

It's kind of spooky, right?

The old Ocky White building was a popular store for more than a century before it closed in 2013.

They discovered the ruins of a medieval priory (中世紀修道院) hidden beneath!

The ruins are made up of buildings including dormitories, scriptoriums, stables, and a hospital.

Going back to those skeletons… some of the remains were found with head injuries or wounds consistent with having been in battle (戰鬥).

Archaeologists say the site offers a "window into medieval Haverfordwest".

NASA's First Native American Astronaut

Native Americans are the indigenous people (原住民) of North, Central, and South America.

Throughout their history, they've had a lot of different role models (榜樣).

On October 5th, NASA astronaut Nicole Aunapu Mann became the first Native American in space.

Mann is also the first woman to command (率領) a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft.

The 45-year-old is a member of the Wailacki of the Round Valley Indian Tribes.

She arrived with the SpaceX Crew-5 mission team on October 6th.

They will spend five months aboard the floating space laboratory (實驗室), and conduct (執行) over 200 scientific studies.

The experiments are geared to prepare for human exploration beyond low-Earth orbit and to benefit life on Earth.

She hopes her achievements will encourage other Native American children to pursue their dreams.

She says having a goal is important, because once you achieve that goal, you can ask, "What's next? What else can I do?"
