Taitung Farmer Finds Success Farming…Snails!

Snails are fascinating creatures.

They are not only one of the slowest animals on Earth…

…but they've also been around for a very long time!

In many places around the world, snails are edible

That means it's safe to eat.

And in Taitung, a farmer named Chang Cheng-hsiung (張正雄) decided to change from growing vegetables (種植蔬菜) to raising snails (養蝸牛)!

Before, he thought of these snails as pests (害蟲).

But now, he's using them to make food!

He sells things like canned snails (罐裝蝸牛) and sausages (香腸) made from pork and snails.

People in Taiwan and other countries buy his products.

Chang said farming became harder and harder for him as he got older.

So, he thought of raising snails.

He raises between 80,000 to 100,000 white jade snails

These snails are popular in international and French cuisine

Taitung is a great place for these snails because the environment is clean

And, it's easy for people with little land to start raising snails because it doesn't cost much.

But, these white jade snails are very delicate (嬌嫩).

Even a small change can hurt them.

However, if you take care of them well, they taste much better than other snails you might see in Taiwan.

Farmer Chang has a friend who helps him sell the snail products.

They sell in Taiwan, and also in places like Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam, and Japan.

So, next time you think about trying something new, just remember the snail farmer from Taitung.

It's never too late to find something new and exciting!

Chinese Company Stacks a Car Tower

Vehicle safety (車輛的安全性) is very important.

Cars need to be made with strong materials to protect the driver and passengers inside.

But how can a car company prove (證明) their vehicles are strong enough?

One Chinese car company called Chery decided to use a unique way to show off how strong their car is!

Chery wanted to show everyone how strong their new electric car (電動車), the eQ7, really is.

They stacked (堆疊) seven of these cars on top of each other, making a big car tower (成為一座汽車塔)!

Right now, China is making lots of electric cars.

Many companies are trying to tell people that their car is the best one to buy.
Chery used this special way to show that their new eQ7 car is super strong.

They put one car on the ground and then put six more cars on top of it, one by one.

Usually, for a car to be safe, it should be able to carry up to four times its own weight

Chery's tower showed their car can handle even more weight!

But, some experts pointed out that Chery wasn't the first to think of this idea.

Another company, Volvo (富豪汽車), has been making car towers since the 1980s.

In fact, Volvo did this same trick in 2021 using seven of their own cars.

While some think Chery might have copied the idea from Volvo, this tower is still a clever way to show that their cars can be very strong and safe.

Tasty Tidbit

There are tons of things to learn about outer space, but still so many questions to ask. For example…

What does outer space smell like?

Well, when astronauts live in a space station, sometimes they have to wear space suits to go outside.

And when they come back in, they say their space suits smell a little bit like… barbecue?!?!

Yep, many astronauts agree, outer space can smell like hot metal, or cooked meat.

Some scientists say this smell could come from the space station, or even from the Earth's outer atmosphere.

And other scientists say… it could be the smell of dying stars. WHOAH.

But remember, space is HUGE. So if we go somewhere far away… it could smell completely different!
