EPA Invites Citizen Participation to Install Solar Panels

When it comes to clean energy (乾淨能源), people often think of solar power (太陽能).

Sunlight can be an endless source of energy (無盡的能源), if you know where to install solar panels (太陽能板).

Think about the sunniest spots you know.

Where would you put solar panels?

If you're thinking about rooftops (屋頂)… you're not the only one!

The Environmental Protection Agency (環保署), or EPA, wants to install (安裝) solar panels on rooftops across Taiwan.

It's part of the government's net zero carbon emission goals by 2050 (政府的2050年淨零碳排放目標).

The EPA says it plans to install solar panels on at least 1,000 rooftops with "citizen participation" (公民參與).

The rooftops would be located among 1,222 low-carbon communities certified by the EPA.

They include residential buildings (住宅建築), community centers, and temples (寺廟).

People who let the government use their roofs for solar installations won't need to pay any money.

And they could even be eligible for rebates (有資格獲得回饋) from the Taiwan Power Company (台電)!

The EPA says in the future, they will make green energy generation (產生綠色能源的) rooftops a requirement (要求) to be certified as a low-carbon community.

Speaking of clean energy…

The World's First Energy Positive Hotel in Norway

When a building using sustainable energy (永續能源) makes more energy than it uses, we can say it's "energy-positive" (正能量).

Many countries around the world are working hard to reach environmental goals

And Norway is a global leader in sustainability.

In fact, the world's first energy-positive hotel will be located above the Arctic Circle (北極圈)…

…in Norway!

It's a luxury resort (豪華度假村) that will use solar energy to power its facilities.

The building is being built on stilt-like poles over a fjord, near a glacier.

The poles (柱子) will hold the hotel above the pristine (純淨的) water to preserve the environment.

The building will be shaped like a ring, with windows showing visitors views of the glacier.

The hotel's interior (內部) will be decorated with eco-friendly materials.

And its four restaurants will serve dishes with ingredients that are locally sourced
They will even have a farm onsite (現場)!

The hotel will also have its own waste recycling and water management systems.

The Svart Hotel is scheduled to open in 2024.

Let's go back in time!

A 500-Year-Old Mystery - Solved!

Have you ever made-up a secret code (密碼) with your friends?

If you're good at deducing (推理) things, it can be easy to crack (破解) a secret code.

But other times, it could take experts a lot of research to discover the meaning of a hidden message!

A group of cryptographers recently decoded a 500-year-old mystery.

It was a secret message sent in 1547 by the King of Spain to his ambassador (大使) in France.

At the time, the only way to send a message was through writing letters, but it wasn't very secure (安全的).

That's because letters can be easily copied or stolen.

So, Charles V developed a cipher (密碼) to send secret information to his allies.

Part of his message was written in French, and the coded parts used 120 different symbols (符號).

Some symbols represented one letter, and others stood for several letters combined.

There were even some symbols that meant nothing at all, to make it harder to crack the code!

But the team kept working hard to solve it.

In the end, they discovered the meaning of the secret message:

Charles V said he wanted to keep the peace with France, but he heard a rumor someone might be trying to kill him.

He asked his ambassador to find out anything he could about the rumor (謠言).

Now that researchers have cracked Charles V's cipher, they will learn more about him from the hundreds of similar letters he sent in Europe.
