More Black-faced Spoonbills Wintering in Taiwan

Its name tells you exactly what it looks like.

The Black-faced Spoonbill (黑面琵鷺) is a bird that lives around water.

It has mostly white feathers.

And its face and legs are black.

Its mouth, or "bill" (喙) is also black.

And it is a flat wide shape, like a spoon.

The black-faced spoonbill uses its flat bill to look for food in the water.

Even though it can be found in some countries in Asia, the black-faced spoonbill is endangered (瀕危).

In fact, black-faced spoonbills almost went extinct (絕種) in the 1980s.

Now, scientists say there are around 6,600 black-faced spoonbills in the world.

And more than 4,000 of these spoonbills spent the winter living in Taiwan!

Experts say 4,288 black-faced spoonbills stayed on the island over winter.

That's more than 60 percent of all black-faced spoonbills around the world.

Bird experts say all this information tells us, that the environment in Taiwan is very important for black-faced spoonbills.

Robot Trash Cans Clean Up New York City

Throwing your trash into the trash can (垃圾桶) helps keep the environment clean.

If you're out on the street, and you have some garbage, you should look for a trash can.

You might have to walk around a bit to find one.

But… what if the garbage can came to find you?

Excuse me, I have some trash.

A little closer…

Closer…

And…

Thanks!

It kind of sounds like a movie about the future.

But something like this really happened in New York City!

Two robot trash cans (垃圾桶機器人) went to work at a public space in Manhattan (曼哈頓).

The plastic trash cans could move around.

One was for garbage, and one was for recycling (回收).

And each trash can had a camera on top.

Scientists wanted to see how people would use the trash cans.

Most people seemed to like the robots.

But there were a few people who didn't like the robots.

One person said the moving trash cans were "creepy" (詭異).

Another person even kicked the trash can, when it got close.

This is not a very nice thing to do.

But scientists say all this information is very helpful.

They say this will help them understand how to train future robots.

Cockroach Steals Spotlight at Met Gala

Walking the red carpet…

Usually that means famous people, like movie stars, at a special event.

Fans scream, and photographers take photos.

But last week at the Met Gala, someone, or "something" very different walked the red carpet (走紅毯).

The Met Gala is a famous party held in New York City every year.

And this year, stars like Dua Lipa, Michelle Yeoh, and Rihanna were there.

But something else on the red carpet stole the spotlight

It was a cockroach!

The cockroach crawled (爬行) along the carpet, in the middle of famous stars.

Many people noticed.

Some people screamed (尖叫).

But some thought it was very funny.

And photographers, who usually take pictures of movie stars, took pictures of the cockroach.

Videos of the party-crashing cockroach went viral online.
