台灣2022年的九合一選舉
Taiwan's 9-in-1 Elections 2022
Taiwan is a country of more than 23 million people (兩千三百萬多人).
It has many large cities (城市), counties (縣), and special municipalities (直轄市).
And all of those cities and counties need leaders (領導人).
So, how do we choose (選擇) these leaders?
We hold elections (選舉), so people can vote (投票)!
The people we vote for are called candidates (候選人).
And whichever candidate gets the most votes will become the next leader.
Taiwan recently held some very important elections, called the "9-in-1 Elections", for nine different kinds of leaders.
On Saturday, November 26th, people all over Taiwan traveled to their hometowns to vote for their favorite candidates.
十一月二十六日這一天，台灣各個地方的人都回到家鄉，投票給最喜歡的候選人。
People voted for mayors (市長), magistrates (縣長), council members (議員), and more.
Everyone's votes were counted (計算), and Taiwan announced (宣布) its new leaders.
These new leaders all over Taiwan will start their jobs on December 25th, at the end of this year.
Now, maybe your favorite candidate lost (輸了), or you were too young to vote.
But Taiwan is a democracy (民主國家), which means we can vote for leaders again soon!

People in China Protest Lockdowns
In many democracies like Taiwan, people have special rights (權利).
One of these is the right to free speech (言論自由), which means people can talk about their government, when they want to.
People also have the right to protest (抗議), as long as they don't hurt anyone.
But in many other countries, people don't have these rights.
For example, in China, people are not allowed (不允許) to protest.
If they say anything bad about their government, they will be censored (會被審查), and may get in trouble.
But recently, many Chinese people are protesting anyway!
That's because the Chinese government has told millions of its people to stay inside their homes, to stop the spread of COVID-19.
中國政府今年來為了阻止新冠病毒的傳染，強迫好幾百萬國民留在家裡。
Some people in China have been stuck inside their homes (關在家裡) for months, and aren't allowed to leave.
Many are getting very frustrated (沮喪), and starting to criticize their government (批評政府), even though they know it is dangerous.
They hold up white pieces of paper (白紙), because they aren't allowed to say anything bad.
But everyone who sees the white paper, knows what they are trying to say.
Of course, we are lucky to have free speech in Taiwan.
We just have to remember to listen, too!

世界最大火山 噴出熔岩
World's Biggest Volcano Erupts
After all these stories about governments, it's important to remember that we still have some other problems, too…
…like volcanoes!
Earth's largest volcano, Mauna Loa, is in the U.S. state of Hawaii (夏威夷).
Hawaii is made up of many small islands, and Mauna Loa is on the biggest one.
And it has recently started to erupt (噴發)!
Lava (岩漿) has started to flow (流動) down from the top of Mauna Loa mountain.
And some of the lava is as hot as 1,000 degrees Celsius (攝氏一千度)!
Luckily, the mountain is not exploding (沒有爆炸), and the lava is moving very slowly.
And scientists say Mauna Loa hasn't erupted for 40 years, so this is a great chance for them to do more research (研究).
Most people aren't in danger yet, but scientists say everyone should still be careful.
Let's just be happy that Taiwan didn't vote for a volcano!
