Hi everyone, it's time for a new episode of News Bites…
I'm Paz Bueno.
And I'm Nancy Sun.
In today's episode…
A competition for land in Longtan, and a doctor who wants you to eat insects.
And for today's Tasty Tidbit…a pink lake!
Let's get into it.

Technology and Temples Compete for Land
What is in northwestern Taiwan
This corner of the country is famous for making computer chips
Many companies have factories (工廠) in Hsinchu and Taoyuan.
They make some of the most advanced technology in the world.
It's an important business for a small country like Taiwan.
But there is something else.
That place has many temples, graves and other historical sites (古蹟).
Some of them are hundreds of years old, and highly important to local people.
And because Taiwan is not very big, there is a competition for land.
It's new technology versus old temples.
That's what happened in Longtan (龍潭).
It's a beautiful area close to the mountains near Taoyuan City.
Recently, a top company decided to build a new factory in Longtan.
The factory would make semiconductors (半導體).
The company promised it would bring money and opportunities to Longtan.
The new factory would manufacture 600 billion NT worth of computer chips every year.
Plus, it would provide nearly 6,000 jobs.
But, they would need to buy a lot of land to build the factory.
And the people who live on that land didn't want to sell it.
It was their home, and their families had lived there for generations
These families have old temples on that land, where they pay respects to their ancestors
And their ancestors' graves (祖先的墳墓) are there, too.
The company tried to change their minds, but the people just didn't want to move.
Recently, the company cancelled plans for the Longtan factory.
They said they would find a different place to build it.
This kind of thing is happening all over the country.
Many people are worried about it.
The semiconductor industry is important for Taiwan.
Plus, technology around the world depends on computer chips made in Taiwan.
But, history is also important, and it cannot be replaced
As we move into the future…
…we need to find a compromise (遷就) between technology and temples.

Scientists Say We Should Eat Insects
Do you like to eat insects?
You could try some cricket cookies, or some worm flour waffles.
Or do you think that sounds strange?
It's true that most people rarely eat insects.
A lot of people think it's yucky.
But in some communities, people eat insects all the time.
And scientists say we should all eat more insects.
That's what Dr. Kelemu says.
She is the director of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology.
Kelumu
This center in Kenya studies everything about insects.
Dr. Kelumu says insects are a good food source.
That's because insects are nutritious (有營養).
She says they have a lot of protein (蛋白質).
That means insects can give us energy.
They also have lots of nutrients, like zinc and iron.
That's why more than two billion people around the world eat insects.
Insects can even be used to make cooking oil (食用油).
Dr. Kelumu also says that eating insects is better for the environment.
It's more sustainable (可持續) than eating meat.
That's because of how much food we need to feed animals.
To make 1 kilogram of beef (牛肉), a cow needs to eat 25 kilograms of food.
On the other hand, insects only need to eat 2.2 kilograms of food.
So we don't need to feed insects as much, to get the same amount of food.
For these reasons, people should eat more insects.
It's healthy for our bodies and for our planet.
So, if you're willing to add insects to your diet, you could help make our world a better place.
Who knows… you might even find them delicious (好吃).

So, in today's newsbites…
Two groups of people disagreed over how to use land in Taoyuan's Longtan district.
A technology company wanted to build a big factory there.
But the local people didn't want to sell the land where they've lived for generations.

And,
A doctor wants everyone to eat more bugs.
Dr. Kelumu says insects can be a healthy part of our diet.
She says eating insects is also better for the environment.

Tasty Tidbit
Lake Hillier is a special lake in Australia.
It's famous for its bright pink color.
This lake is about 600 meters long and 250 meters wide, surrounded by sand and trees.
The pink color stays the same even if you take the water out of the lake.
This color comes from tiny organisms living in the lake, like algae and red bacteria.
An explorer first wrote about this lake in 1802.
Even though the lake has lots of salt, like the Dead Sea, it's safe to swim in, but you need permission first.
Do you know about other lakes around the world?
If you have a fun fact, a joke, or interesting news you'd like to share with us, record your message and send us your Tasty Tidbit to newsbites@icrt.com.tw, and you might hear it at the end of an episode!
Tune in again next time for an all new episode of News Bites!
