🎙️ Welcome to Revise and Resubmit — the podcast where groundbreaking research meets the curious mind.
Today, we're diving into a world that thrives in the shadows, yet fuels economies in broad daylight. A world where rules bend, borders blur, and entrepreneurs hustle not in boardrooms, but in bustling markets, backstreets, and beyond.
We're talking about Informal Entrepreneurship — a topic that’s as misunderstood as it is widespread.
In this episode, we explore the integrative review by Esther Salvi, Frank-Martin Belz, and Sophie Bacq, published in the prestigious Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice — an FT50 journal, which means it’s not just any publication, it’s one of the top 50 business journals in the world, as ranked by the Financial Times.
Published by Sage on August 7th, 2022, this article does more than summarize existing literature. It builds a new typology of informal entrepreneurs — not all of whom are poor, not all of whom are trying to “go legit.” Some are reactively formalizing, others proactively formalizing, and a few are informalizing — choosing to step away from regulation altogether.
This isn’t just a literature review. It’s a roadmap for future research, a mirror held up to the entrepreneurial world’s informal undercurrent.
So here’s the question:
If some entrepreneurs choose to stay informal, despite the risks… what does that say about the systems they’re opting out of?
Stick around.

Special thanks to the authors and Sage Publications for this brilliant contribution to one of the world’s most prestigious journals.
