Description

Welcome back to Revise and Resubmit, the podcast where research meets real life. Today, we’re diving into a groundbreaking study that takes on a challenge we all face at some level: managing stigma.

Our spotlight is on the Journal of Management Studies, a prestigious FT50 journal, and the brilliant minds behind the research—Rebecca Mitchell, Jane Maley, Brendan Boyle, and Jun Gu. Their article, “Stigma Management within and between Levels,” doesn’t just scratch the surface; it digs deep into the coal mining industry in Australia, exploring how individuals, organizations, and the industry as a whole tackle the same stigma.

What makes this study fascinating is its cross-level analysis. It reveals how strategies ripple up and down, from individuals crafting personal narratives to industries influencing public perception. With insights drawn from 61 interviews and archival data, the study peels back the layers of a complex system.

As I read this, I couldn’t help but wonder: Are there universal strategies we can all use to manage stigma, whether it’s at work, in our social circles, or in our communities?

A huge thank you to the authors and Wiley for this eye-opening research. And before we close, don’t forget to subscribe to Revise and Resubmit on Spotify, check out our YouTube channel Weekend Researcher, or tune in on Amazon Prime and Apple Podcasts.

Now, let me ask you this: If stigma management is about reshaping perceptions, how can we start reframing our own stories today?
