SUMMARY:
Nelly skips forward in her story to the following summer. Francis gives birth to a baby boy but soon dies from the strain of childbirth. Hindley assigns Nelly the task of raising the child, and he falls into a deep depression and angry state, exacerbated by his excessive drinking. Heathcliff takes the majority of the beatings from Hindley, and he takes a great pleasure in watching his Abuser’s decline. Catherine is spending more time with the Linton’s and behaves like a proper lady with him and like a rebel when with Heathcliff. One afternoon when Hindley is out of the house, Heathcliff skives off of work to spend the day with Catherine. She tells him however that the Linton’s are coming, and she cannot be with him. Heathcliff calls Catherine out for spending too much time with the spoilt children, and she retorts that the Linton children are bright and interesting while he is ignorant and dull. Edgar then enters without Isabella, and Heathcliff storms off. Catherine asks Nelly to leave them alone, but she refuses, having been told to act as a chaperone when Edgar visited. Catherine lets her devil out and slaps Nelly which causes the baby Hareton to cry, whereupon Catherine shakes him. Edgar shocked by Catherine’s actions goes to leave but doesn’t make it past the gate before coming back to Catherine and her beauty. Nelly leaves them alone and only returns to tell that that Hindley is coming back and is very drunk. She can instantly tell that they have confessed their love for each other. Edgar flees from Hindley’s wrath and Catherine goes to her room. Nelly tries to hide Hareton and removes the shot from his gun.
