You’re listening to Branch 2 – Prophecy and Promise, Part 3: The Promise of the Saviour. This is Episode 3: Covenants, Kings and Crisis
In this episode of Theology Unpacked, Dr John Moffatt SJ explores the story of rescue and covenant promise in Exodus and its importance for the prophets interpreting the challenges of their time. The narrative of rescue extends beyond Exodus, forming the backbone of Israel’s legendary history. Figures like Joshua, the Judges, and later kings such as Saul, David, and Solomon are portrayed as leaders through whom God delivers His people.
Over time, the narrative moves from legend to historical reality, as Israel and Judah emerge as structured kingdoms. However, their eventual decline is seen as the consequence of breaking the covenant. Yet, despite these disasters, hope persists in the promise of a future Messiah, a descendant of David who will restore God's people.
