I am referring, of course, to the tenure of Roy Jenkins as Home Secretary under Harold Wilson’s government—a tenure lionised by his supporters as a beacon of progressive enlightenment. In reality, Jenkins’ sweeping reforms amounted to a devastating dismantling of traditional structures in law enforcement and justice, the consequences of which still plague our society today
