What is Humility?

• C.S. Lewis - “Humility is not thinking less of ourselves. It is rather thinking of ourselves less!”

• Spurgeon - “Humility is thinking rightly of ourselves.”

Three Observations about Humility:

1. Our Origin

• Genesis 1-2 - We are made from the dust
• Jeremiah - We are finite in the hands of God
• “We are but dust”

2. Our Occupation

• Includes our skills
• It is foolishness to not use our skills and talents for the Lord
• Talents and skills change but our service to the Lord does not end!

3. Our Options

• We can either be humble or be humbled
• Proverbs 14; Proverbs 29:20; Matthew 23:12
• Examples: Lucifer, Saul, Nebuchadnezzar, etc.

• Booker T. Washington - “... it is a pleasure to do something for a friend.”

• We admire humility in others but rarely cultivate it for ourselves.
