The Ukrainian and Turkmen governments have suggested several natural remedies to fight the flu, presenting them as alternatives to vaccinations. Classified 2009 US cables reported:
Ukraine:
• Prime Minister Tymoshenko has publicly stated that she prefers lemon, onion and garlic to protect against the flu. These remedies have been presented as an alternative to vaccination.
Turkmenistan:
• State media have published articles recommending the use of raspberries, honey and horseradish to treat and prevent the flu [2, 5]. In particular:
◦ Raspberries were suggested fresh, as jam or as tea. It was mentioned that aspirin could be dangerous for children and that raspberries were a better solution for reducing fever.
◦ Honey could be added to tea along with rose hips, providing an additional supply of vitamins.
◦ Horseradish mixed with lemon juice was suggested for colds, with the suggestion that it might cause tears for the first week of treatment, but would clear the nasal passages thereafter.
• For influenza prevention, onion and garlic were recommended, supposedly for their natural antibiotic properties.
• Before leaving the house, it was recommended to apply Oksolin ointment, baby lotion, or Vaseline to the nostrils, and to carry a scarf with lavender oil, to hold over the nose when people were coughing or sneezing.
• Additionally, it was recommended to avoid dusty places, because viruses reside in dust.
In both countries, the approach was to suggest natural alternatives to drugs and vaccines, pointing to the absence of side effects for these remedies.
