A weekend meal ministry of Minor Memorial United Methodist Church that provides students in need with two breakfast items, two lunch items, and four snacks while school is in session from September through May.
Currently, they serve two schools: Walls Elementary and Lake Cormorant Elementary. Teachers can testify that food scarcity is a real issue for many of the students in DeSoto County, affecting their ability to learn. No income guidelines are required, but the schools must refer participants.
Minor Memorial UMC has been providing weekend meals since the 2012-2013 school year. When the program first began, we started with seven children. Over the past years, we have served between 80 and 150 children weekly.
The benefits of this program are numerous. Children are less likely to become ill, better focused on their school work, and feel better about themselves. Families are less worried about weekend food scarcity.
