Joni Hoadley, product management coach and consultant, explains why a list of features and dates is not a roadmap, and how to lead with strategy instead.
In this episode of How I PM, Joni shares how to create a roadmap that focuses on business outcomes, inspires alignment, and positions product managers as strategic leaders. A roadmap should communicate direction and focus, not deadlines.
Three ways to build a strategy-based roadmap:
1. Focus on strategic bets. Roadmaps should reflect what matters most, not a list of tactical tasks.
2. Align your team. Think like a tour guide. Use your roadmap to point everyone in the same direction.
3. Move beyond delivery dates. Leave those in your release plan. Your roadmap is about outcomes.
A great roadmap helps teams understand where they are going and why it matters. It drives clarity, confidence, and shared momentum.
