Ever since I was a kid I've been obsessed with culture. Mostly because I didn't fit in much as a nerd and an atheist that didn't really know that other nerds and atheists existed. Everything that was popular was something I didn't really resonate with. Or at least that's how I felt but I never realized that culture as a whole naturally brings people together. Cartoons, shared growth experiences, being in a family, living in a certain town or wearing a certain type of clothing all tends to bring with it some sort of cultural connection. However, sometimes, those cultural connections create a sense of cult-ish behavior when there is protection around a certain idea. Religions have their own rules, dating has it's own rules, what is considered a form of fashion has its own rule-set, and social justice is often fighting for a change in rules while also sticking to its own set of rules (even if they haven't been fully defined yet). With those rules, often comes a sense of morality, and that morality can create conflict when brushed up against other cultures. Of course ours is better than theirs, its OURs. And that's the point of it all. We take ownership over the things we hold so dearly to our identity and therefore either join or form a cult around those ideas. But that's not the fate of humanity, often self-awareness can be a massive step in separating yourself from a hateful place of cult vs. cult and moving into a place of hold space, love, admiration and respect for other people.
