Inanna's descent to the netherworld is described by Joseph Campbell, the famous mythologist, as the oldest recorded account of the passage through the gates of metamorphosis.
It can also be classified as a hero or heroine's journey, a crossing of the threshold, the metaphoric experience of entering the belly of the whale, or experiencing a 'dark night of the soul'.
Dr Mari relates Inanna's journey to the underworld as a time in a person's life that is transformative to the extent of life-changing. This can be a divorce, career change, spiritual awakening, illness, grief or loss. It represents a time to go inward and surrender to life's unexpected challenges.
