AUGUST 3 - When Pride Gets in the Way

3-Year-Bible Reading: Proverbs 21:4; II Thessalonians 1–3

“Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin.” — Proverbs 21:4

“To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power.” — 2 Thessalonians 1:11

“But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.” — 2 Thessalonians 3:3

Have you ever felt like you had to prove something to the world? Maybe it’s getting the most likes, crushing your goals, or just being seen as the best. Our culture celebrates pride and self-promotion, but Proverbs 21:4 reminds us that pride isn’t just an attitude—it’s sin. It blocks our hearts from fully depending on God.

Paul’s letters in 2 Thessalonians show us a better way: relying on God’s strength, being faithful, and living lives that reflect His calling. Instead of being led by ego, we’re invited to be led by the Spirit and shaped by God's purposes.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Pride Check: Where in your life are you tempted to rely on yourself more than on God?

2. Living Worthy: What does it mean to live “worthy of His calling” (2 Thessalonians 1:11)? How can you pursue that this week?

3. God’s Got You: When things get hard or scary, how does knowing “the Lord is faithful” (2 Thessalonians 3:3) give you peace?

BOTTOM LINE

Pride blinds us to God’s best. But when we live by faith and rely on God’s power, He shapes us into people who reflect His goodness, not our own greatness.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, help me to recognize when pride tries to take over. I don’t want to live for my own glory—I want to live for Yours. Teach me to depend on Your strength and stay faithful, even when it’s hard. Thank You for being with me and guarding me every step of the way. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
