JULY 22 - Sweet or Bitter?

3-Year-Bible Reading: Proverbs 20:16–17; Psalm 84; Luke 22

________________________________________

“Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be full of gravel.” —Proverbs 20:17

“For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.” —Psalm 84:10

“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” —Luke 22:42

You know that moment when you get away with something? Maybe it’s sneaking extra time on your phone, copying homework, or telling a white lie to stay out of trouble. At first, it can feel like a win—a quick fix that tastes sweet. But then comes the guilt, the stress, or the fallout—and suddenly, that “sweet” victory turns to gravel in your mouth (Proverbs 20:17).

God offers a better way: not the easy path, but the right one. The psalmist says just one day close to God is better than a thousand lived chasing our own way (Psalm 84:10). And in Luke 22:42, Jesus gives us the ultimate example of surrender—choosing God’s will, even when it’s hard. He didn’t take the easy way out. He chose obedience out of love.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Quick Fix or Lasting Reward? When you’re tempted to take the easy way out, ask yourself—what will this cost later? Is it worth the “gravel” in your mouth?

2. Where’s Your Sweet Spot? The psalmist says just being with God is better than anywhere else. What’s one way you can spend time in God’s presence this week?

3. Jesus Chose the Hard Way: In the garden, Jesus didn’t want to suffer—but He chose to trust God. Is there something hard you’re facing where you need to say, “Not my will, but Yours”?

BOTTOM LINE

God’s way isn’t always easy, but it’s always best. What seems sweet in the moment can turn bitter—choose the lasting joy of walking with Him.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, sometimes I want what’s easy more than what’s right. Help me to see beyond the moment and trust You, even when it’s hard. I want to live in a way that brings You honor and keeps me close to You. Give me the courage to say, “Not my will, but Yours.” In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
