“Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler.” — Proverbs 20:19

“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself… They said to each other, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?’” — Luke 24:27, 32

Have you ever shared something with a friend only to find out later it’s been passed around like a trending meme? Gossip spreads fast—and it hurts. Proverbs 20:19 reminds us to be careful about who we trust with our words and how we speak about others. But there’s another side to this: whose words are we listening to?

In Luke 24, Jesus meets two disciples who are confused and heartbroken. But when He walks with them and explains the Scriptures, something powerful happens—they feel their hearts come alive. Gossip may stir drama, but God’s Word stirs truth, clarity, and passion. So the real question is: are we tuning in to the voice of the world or the voice of Jesus?

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Words Can Wound: Who are you listening to, and how are their words shaping your heart or mindset?

2. Jesus Speaks Life: The disciples didn’t recognize Jesus right away, but they felt the impact of His words. When you read Scripture, do you pay attention to how God might be speaking to you through it?

3. Walk With the Right People: Proverbs warns us not to stick close to “babblers”—those who stir drama. What kind of people are you surrounding yourself with? Are they helping you grow closer to Jesus?

BOTTOM LINE

Words have power. Avoid those who use them to tear others down, and lean into the words of Jesus that give life, truth, and purpose.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, help me to be wise with my words and cautious with the voices I let influence me. Teach me to recognize Your voice in Scripture and in the quiet moments of life. Surround me with people who point me to You, and make me someone who speaks life into others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
