Have you ever found yourself weighing things differently depending on what you value? It's easy to let the world’s standards influence the way we measure success, happiness, or even friendships. But in Proverbs 20:23, we’re reminded that using “false scales” — whether in how we view ourselves or others — doesn’t honor God. Instead of focusing on what the world says is valuable, Philippians 3 teaches us to prioritize knowing Christ above everything else. When we value Him above all things, everything else finds its proper place.

It’s easy for young people to get caught up in comparing themselves to others. Whether it’s the latest trends, social media likes, or the pressure to be perfect, it can feel like we have to “weigh” ourselves against a set of standards that don’t truly reflect who we are in Christ. But remember, God sees you for who you are, not what you appear to be on the outside. The treasure you should pursue is not earthly fame or achievements, but the “surpassing worth of knowing Christ” (Philippians 3:8).

Think about it: if you spent less time measuring your worth by others’ standards, and more time focusing on growing in your relationship with Jesus, how would your life change? This doesn’t mean you can’t have goals or aspirations, but it does mean that your identity and value should never depend on what’s on the outside. When you weigh everything against the truth of Christ’s love and purpose for you, you’ll find that the scales tip in a different direction — one that leads to lasting joy and peace.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. True Value: What are some things you tend to value most in life? Are they things that align with God’s perspective?

2. Measuring by God’s Standards: How can you shift your focus to value your relationship with Jesus above everything else?

3. True Treasure: How does knowing that Christ’s love is more valuable than anything this world offers change your perspective?

BOTTOM LINE

The world’s standards may seem appealing, but true treasure is found in knowing Christ. Let Him be the one who sets the value in your life.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us that true worth is found in You alone. Help me to focus less on what the world says is valuable and more on growing in my relationship with You. Teach me to measure my life by Your standards, so that I may treasure what truly matters. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
