JUNE 8 - Don’t Open the Floodgates
3-Year-Bible Reading: Proverbs 17:14; Psalm 66; Exodus 13

“The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so quit before the quarrel breaks out.” — Proverbs 17:14
“Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul.” — Psalm 66:16
“By a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery.” — Exodus 13:14

Ever turned on a water hose just a little and then suddenly—WHOOSH—water blasts out everywhere? That’s what Proverbs 17:14 is saying about arguments. A little strife may seem harmless at first, but once it starts, things can escalate fast—like a flood of words and emotions you can’t control. Instead of letting conflict spill out, God calls us to walk away before it explodes.
But conflict isn't all there is. Psalm 66 reminds us to zoom out and remember the bigger picture—how God has worked in our lives. Sharing what He’s done can give us peace in tense moments. And Exodus 13 shows that when God brings freedom, He leads us forward with purpose. Just like He freed the Israelites from Egypt, He frees us from reacting with anger, holding grudges, or staying stuck in drama.

THINK ABOUT IT
1. Stop the Flood Early: What small conflict in your life could turn into something bigger if left unchecked? How can you “quit before the quarrel breaks out”?
2. Share What God’s Done: What has God done in your life that you can share to encourage others or even calm a situation down?
3. Let God Lead: The Israelites followed God after being freed. Are you letting God lead your actions, especially in how you handle tough moments?

BOTTOM LINE
It’s better to stop conflict before it floods your heart. Remember what God has done and let Him lead you into peace.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help me recognize when conflict is starting and give me the strength to walk away before things go too far. Remind me of all You’ve done in my life, and help me speak peace, not strife. Lead me like You led the Israelites—out of the mess and into freedom. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
