“A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” — Proverbs 25:28

“Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end.” — Psalm 119:33

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” — John 15:4

Ever seen a video of a car speeding down a winding mountain road with no guardrails? It’s stressful, right? That’s kind of what life looks like without God’s Word and guidance. In Proverbs 25:28, we’re told that lacking self-control is like a city with broken walls—totally vulnerable and open to attack. But Psalm 119 shows us that God's commands aren’t rules to ruin our fun—they’re the guardrails that keep us safe and growing.

And in John 15, Jesus says we need to stay connected to Him like a branch to a vine if we want to bear fruit in our lives. Together, these verses remind us that when we live with purpose, rooted in Jesus, we become strong, protected, and fruitful.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Guardrails or Chains? Do you ever feel like God’s commands are just a bunch of restrictions? What if instead, they’re boundaries meant to protect your joy and peace?

2. Staying Connected: Jesus said we need to “abide” in Him. What are practical ways you can stay close to Jesus in your daily life—especially when you’re busy or feeling distracted?

3. Self-Control Starts with Surrender: Where in your life do you struggle with self-control? How could leaning into God’s Word help you build strength in that area?

BOTTOM LINE

Living with self-control and staying rooted in God’s truth isn't about being perfect—it's about trusting God’s design for your life, staying close to Jesus, and letting Him shape who you’re becoming.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me enough to give me Your Word and guidance. Sometimes I want to do life my own way, but I know Your ways lead to real life and peace. Help me to stay close to You, like a branch connected to the vine. Teach me self-control and help me trust Your boundaries as protection, not punishment. I want to grow strong and fruitful in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
