Description

1975 was a big year for Elton John. He was coming off the heels of his massive hit record "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," he had a thriving record label, he had made a small fortune of $8 million on his new record deal with MCA, he was asked by Pete Townshend (of The Who) to be the pinball wizard in their 1975 film adaptation of their rock-opera, "Tommy," and he obliged; besides the mostly negative criticisms of the 1974 album "Caribou," he was on top of the music world! It was time to show the world who they really were. Up to this point, Elton John and his lyricist/musical partner, Bernie Taupin, were somewhat ambiguous about their personal lives in their music, and their recording style was pretty fast paced, only taking a couple of weeks tops in the studio. They decided to take time on this one--and dig deep about their experiences. They discuss how they met, where they came from, and personal trials and tribulations, including the infamous suicide attempt referenced in "Someone Saved My Life Tonight." "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" may not be the most commercially successful Elton John record, but it captures a glimpse at that moment in he and Taupin's lives and each song is dripping with raw emotion. However, it was the album that broke the original line-ups back, with members Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson being let go by John before the following album. Some consider this the end of an era for John, but definitely it was definitely not the end of his career. Join Brad, Dave, and Jon as they dive into the origin stories of "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy"......
