[BRAD's PICK] Hip Hop super-duo Run the Jewels are no strangers to defying conventions in the music industry. Killer Mike had been putting out politically conscious rap in Atlanta for a little over a decade, befriending Big Boi and guesting on a few Outkast tracks, and even one for Jay-Z. All of this and his various random appearances on Adult Swim show that Killer Mike was always a climbing star, but in his mid-30s he met someone that was also on his way to the top. El-P, also in his mid-30s, had made a name for himself in the underground hip hop scene by not giving a fuck and putting out well produced music. Hailing from Brooklyn, he helped launch Aesop Rock's career with his record label, Definitive Jux, continuing to put out great hip hop, such as Mr. Lif & Cage until it went on hiatus in 2010. However, in 2011, the stars aligned and Killer Mike and El P were introduced (famously by Adult Swim's Jason DeMarco) and they collaborated for the first time to create Killer Mike's epic album "R.A.P. Music" in 2012. And then, for some reason, these two men at the top of their careers decide to do something crazy... They combine forces and create Run The Jewels, gaining more commercial success in the last 7 years than either of them probably imagined it would. With RTJ4 on the horizon, being produced by the legendary Rick Ruben, I thought it might be nice to revisit the inception of the whole Run the Jewels concept, and the first album does just that. Join me (Brad), Dave, and Jon, as we enter into some of the deeper issues being discussed with our local hip hop expert (and my brother) Kevin!
