We've discussed many albums on this podcast that are considered the album that fundamentally changed the band from that point forward. From Iron Maiden's guitarist Adrian Smith leaving after "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son"; to the immediate crumbling of the relationships in Pink Floyd during and after "The Wall"; sometimes bands need to change how they are doing things and who is involved. However, for the most-part these break up albums so far have shown us some amazing songwriting, and they are still supporting each other artistically, like in Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours"...
Today's album... is not one of those albums. Here we have Styx "Kilroy was Here", the album that made the group disband for the first time. Dennis DeYoung fell into the trappings of his ego and pushed the music in the direction of sci fi concepts and ballads, much to Tommy Shaw's dismay. Although there are a few redeeming songs on this attempt at a "Wall"-esque concept album, it has never been more clear to me that the bandmates were not fully in it...
But HEY, to help us through this album, we have the ONE AND ONLY Andy Merill AKA BRAK here to share in our highs, lows, and tangents along the way as we try and unpack what happened to Styx in the year 1983...
