[DAVE's PICK] "The band that launched a thousand bands..." It may be a bold claim, but if you look at their legacy of rock innovation, The Ventures surely deserve that moniker. They were the one of the earliest rock bands to use fuzz and flanging effects for the guitar, make use of the 12 string, accidentally creating what would come to be called "surf rock;" and they were also one of the first to make concept albums in rock music, starting with 1961's "The Colorful Ventures." Considered by Encyclopedia Britannica to be, "a prototype for guitar-based rock groups," The Ventures hit their peak in the US in 1963 with five albums on the billboard chart at once, but by the time the 70s rolled around, the rock torch had been passed and the music trends in the US were leaving them behind. Fortunately, despite that, they maintained huge worldwide success, due partially to the lack of a language barrier inherent in their instrumental songs, and in Japan are considered bigger than The Beatles (by 2 to 1!). The amount of character they can inject into their guitar playing is astounding and at times it is borderline jazz, and to this day they are still the highest selling instrumental rock group in the world. Join Brad, Dave, Jon, and Scott as we dive in to a non-stop beach party extravaganza in... "The Album Concept Hour Learns to Play the Ventures!"
