The Who started in the "mod" (modernist) subculture in the London music scene that enjoyed mopeds, pop rock, amphetamines, and dancing till the break of dawn. They were prone to leaving a path of destruction in their wake, whether it be a wrecked hotel room (Keith Moon's specialty) or instruments and equipment at the end of one of their shows. Ironically, their rivals at the time were another subculture called "rockers" (better known as "greasers"), who loved motorcycles, slicked back hair, and rock 'n' roll. The Who, Keith Moon especially, initially had disdain for the hippie culture of "peace and love,"--that is until they familiarized themselves, Pete Townshend especially, with the mind expanding properties of LSD mixed with the teachings of charismatic spiritual leaders; and eventually kind of blended into a more singular youth movement. The latter half of Tommy is very representative of that journey. With his parents neglecting their parental duties to take drugs and party (and leaving him with the sinister uncle Ernie), we still see some of that disdain for certain aspects of the hippie culture. However, from there it barrels full on into a mixture of reverence and satire toward the hippie spiritual awakening. Tommy becomes a cult leader after miraculously regaining his senses, and convinces his followers that they can only achieve enlightenment (or be a true pinball wizard...?) by blocking off their sense of sight, hearing, and speaking. I won't spoil how that situation goes, but Brad, Jon, and Dave will be sniffing it out with the senses we have left...
