The brothers return to the land of Israel and break the bad news to their father that Shimon is being held in Egypt, and that they can only free him by bringing down Binyamin.
Yaakov enters a deep depression, and refuses to send Binyamin down.
Later, when they are all on the verge of starvation, Yaakov acquiesces and sends everyone down, including Binyamin, to Egypt.
