Yosef is dispatched by his father Yaakov to check on his brothers who were shepherding their sheep in Shechem.
Upon seeing Yosef, the brothers conspire to kill him. Reuvain saves Yosef by suggesting to let him die on his own in a pit. Reuvain planned to save him later.
How could Yaakov send Yosef to his brothers? Wasn’t this obviously a recipe for disaster?
How could Yosef’s brother plan to kill him? This is not what we would expect from our esteemed forebears.
