Description

On the first day of the week, women found Jesus' tomb empty and were told by two men that he had risen, reminding them of his words in Galilee about his death and resurrection on the third day. They told the Eleven and others, but were not believed initially . Peter went to the tomb and found only the linen cloths . Later that day, Jesus appeared to two disciples on the road to Emmaus, who recognised him when he broke bread, after he had explained the scriptures to them . The two disciples returned to Jerusalem and reported this to the assembled disciples, who also shared that Jesus had appeared to Simon . While they were talking, Jesus himself appeared among them, showed them his hands and feet, and ate with them . He explained that everything written about him in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled, and that the Messiah would suffer and rise on the third day, with repentance for the forgiveness of sins to be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem . He promised to send what his Father had promised and instructed them to stay in the city until they were clothed with power from on high . Jesus then led them to the vicinity of Bethany, blessed them, and was taken up into heaven . The disciples worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, staying continually at the temple, praising God .
