We’re chatting with Madison Johnston. A 26-year-old who moved to the west coast after graduating from university and who now lives a sober life. Madison used to be the quote-on-quote, party girl. She’d never turned down a chance to drink and realized alcohol was an easy way to let loose from a lot of hurt she was feeling.
When Covid came to Canada in 2020. Her party antics stayed the same but her mental health plummeted and she said for the first time she truly experienced depression. Eventually, she was put on medication and told to not drink for 30 days to see how it would work, and she soon realized she couldn’t make it 5 days without a drink.
This is when Madison started to wonder about sobriety. From there, she and her therapist brainstormed ways to remain accountable for taking care of her mental health.
On Saturday, December 10th, Madison will be one year sober. We cover so much in this discussion such as why sobriety is certainly not age specific, to dealing with and redefining familial and romantic relationships and friendships, and to understanding triggers and setting firm boundaries.
