Many Christians struggle with understanding their true standing before God, caught in cycles of trying to earn His favor through their own efforts. However, there are two types of righteousness: self-effort righteousness based on our works, and Christ's righteousness based entirely on what Jesus accomplished on the cross. Jesus told His audience that even the Pharisees' righteousness wasn't enough for the kingdom of God, pointing to the impossibility of earning salvation through human effort. The great exchange means Jesus became our sin so we could become His righteousness. Our standing before God is based entirely on Christ's work, not our own, making us family rather than servants trying to earn our way into God's good graces.
