The word samadhi in Indian philosophy denotes a transcendental state of super-consciousness in which a person goes beyond the barriers of his normally egocentric psycho-physical setup. Samadhi is quite often translated into English using words like trance, hypnotic state or altered state of consciousness. The uplifting and trans-empirical state of samadhi cannot be translated using words like trance, which just denotes a delusionary psychotropic mental state. Samadhi gives a yogi mastery or control over the forces of nature and it cannot be induced by drugs or hypnotism like the state of trance. Trance is merely a \'tamasika\' state with a distorted vision of reality accompanied sometimes by a sense of false joy or exhilaration. A person in a trance suffers from an undisciplined and deluded mind with which it is impossible to attain any higher state of realization. In this video Babaji and Rajiv bring out these distinctions between the meaning of the words ‘samadhi’ and ‘trance’.
