Harsh punishments under Sharia are modern interpretations of an ancient tradition theconversation May 8, 2019 11.13am BST

As a scholar of law and religion, I would argue that #Sharia is not one thing: It is a complex tradition with multiple interpretations – one that accommodates the celebration of same-sex attraction alongside rulings condemning homosexual intercourse.

How do #endorsementdeals work?

What is a music endorsement deal? Put simply, music #endorsements are when an artist is directly affixing their name to a certain company or product. It means the artist is endorsing and approving that product and confirming to the audience that they use it exclusively.Jul 29, 2019

 LeBron James - Nike

He is considered as the Michael Jordan of modern basketball. At just 18, he declined a deal worth $10 Million from Reebok. But, Nike managed to crack a deal with him later. In 2015, he signed a whopping $1 Billion minimum lifetime deal with the brand.

Cristiano Ronaldo - Nike

Ronaldo is one of the most recognisable athletes in the world. He has a lifetime endorsement deal with Nike, which is set to exceed $1 Billion. That's not all, he also rakes in a lot of moolah from other brands such as Herbalife, EA Sports and American Tourister. He also happens to be the third highest paid athlete worldwide. in.askmen 5-biggest-endorsement-deals-that-make-these-athletes-a-truckload-of-money

What is Sharia and how is it applied?

Apostasy, or leaving the faith, is a very controversial issue in the Muslim world and experts say the majority of scholars believe it is punishable by death.

But a minority of Muslim thinkers, particularly those engaged with Western societies, argue that the reality of the modern world means the "punishment" should be left to God - and that Islam itself is not threatened by apostasy.

The Koran itself declares there is "no compulsion" in religion.

Some #Islamicorganisations have argued that there are many safeguards and a high burden of proof in the application of hadd penalties.

The UN has spoken out against death by stoning, saying it "constitutes torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and is thus clearly prohibited".

Islamism and Sharia

The interpretation of Sharia that originally guided the recent laws in Brunei is not a straightforward revival of an ancient tradition.

To many Americans, Sharia has become synonymous with harsh punishments and intolerance. This is a misunderstanding of Islamic law, both as it functioned historically and as it informs the daily lives of millions of Muslims today.
