Description

Sir George Mackenzie sent hundreds of Covenanters to suffering and death in the 1600s — then was laid to rest in a fine domed tomb only steps from the very ground where they starved. For three centuries, the two sides of that quarrel kept an uneasy quiet, a few feet of earth apart. Then, one December night in 1998, a man seeking shelter fell through the floor of Mackenzie's mausoleum into the bones below — and the attacks began.

This week we walk into Greyfriars: the real history of the Killing Time and the Covenanters' Prison, the four months a thousand prisoners spent in the open air, and the wreck of the Crown of London. We sit with the man history remembers as "Bloody Mackenzie" — and the question of whether he earned the name or the legend built it for him. And we walk the ground where hundreds of visitors have reported scratches, bruises, fainting's and collapses since 1999, up to the exorcism that may have cost a medium his life. Documented history, recorded legend, and honest doubt, laid side by side — so you can decide for yourself what waits behind that locked door.

Light a candle. Get cozy. And let's talk spooky.

A note on how we source: this show separates documented history from recorded legend from popular retelling, and says out loud which is which. The modern accounts are reported experiences, not established fact — shared as what people say happened, and left to you to weigh.
