The Giff are one of Spelljammer's most unique races - eight-foot hippopotamus mercenaries obsessed with military discipline, gunpowder weapons, and proper chain of command. But there's far more to these space hippos than meets the eye.
In this comprehensive deep dive, we explore everything about the Giff: their mysterious lost homeworld, their connection to dead gods in the Astral Sea, why they can't use spelljammer helms, their bizarre refusal to fight other Giff, and why they worship firearms despite living in a universe where magic is demonstrably more powerful.

The Giff represent a fascinating contradiction: powerful warriors who prefer weak weapons, mercenaries who value protocol over victory, and soldiers whose defining trait is getting into bar fights for fun. Their literal-minded approach to warfare, inability to use magic, and absolute refusal to fight other Giff make them one of the most memorable races in all of Spelljammer.
Whether you're a DM looking to use Giff in your campaign, a player considering a Giff character, or just a lore enthusiast, this video covers everything from AD&D through 5th Edition.
